Design Village Penang unveiled
27 April 2015
P E Land (Penang) Sdn Bhd today launched the construction phase of its much-awaited Design Village premium outlet mall development in Penang, putting it on target to open for Christmas 2016.
The unveiling ceremony at Georgetown’s historical Blue Mansion was officiated by Chief Minister YAB Mr. Lim Guan Eng, and witnessed by hundreds of celebrities, socialites and other prominent members of the community as well as potential and signed tenants representing luxury and premium brands.
Speaking at the ceremony, the company's Director Joanna Ling stated that its Design Village premium outlet mall was sited in Penang to cater to the underserved and as yet untapped northern region's 5.7 million population and 4.8 million visitors from outside the region, and from Thailand, Indonesia, China, India and the Middle East.
She added that Batu Kawan, which was easily accessible via the island-mainland virtual ring road formed by the two bridges, was especially ideal given it was conceived and master-planned by state-owned Penang Development Corporation to be "the new Penang", the burgeoning mainland activity hub which had attracted a star-studded list of international and Malaysian investors to lead the township in industrial, retail, leisure, residential, educational, and hospitality developments.
Mr. Allan Soo, MD of Savills (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd., international leasing and retail development advisor for Design Village, added that the novel premium outlet retail format, which has proven successful elsewhere, was the perfect way to deliver enhanced value for money while meeting the upgraded expectations of shoppers whose lifestyles were now becoming increasingly sophisticated.
To illustrate its reception and acceptance, Mr. Soo said that the majority of the 70 or more luxury, premium and international labels approached in pre-marketing efforts have shown clear interest and strong commitment.
Design Village, the first and only premium outlet mall in the northern region, is being built on a 40-acre mixed-use site that will later also include a hotel and high end condominiums, and features 400,000 sf of nett leasable space in 150 stores featuring a mix of luxury and premium brands aimed at middle and upper income shoppers.
In line with global trends, Design Village will upgrade the typical premium outlet mall to a full luxury experience replete with sophisticated store design and customer service.
The single-storey open-air mall features cool weather-protected walkways, lush tropical landscape and premium and luxury brand anchor stores highlighted in distinctive tall ‘jewel boxes’. Design Village will be supported by shuttle services to and from hotels as well as the airport, 2500 car parking bays, and F&B outlets with international cuisine.
P E Land (Penang), the developer of Design Village, is a subsidiary of P E Land, the experienced engineering, construction, retail and property development arm of established Borneo-based conglomerate Pan Sarawak Holdings whose combined market knowledge underpins its philosophy of an overall novel, wholesome and sustainable retail and real estate experience.
